The Potency Arms Race Is Losing Steam. Good.

For most of the last decade, the cannabis industry has been running one race: make it stronger. Every harvest, every new concentrate, every label seemed to chase a bigger number. In 2026, that race finally started to look like a mistake, and a growing number of lawmakers, scientists, and consumers are saying so out loud.
This is an editorial, so we will be direct about where we stand. We think the potency obsession was always pointed at the wrong target, and we built The DART on that belief. Here is why the correction is overdue, and what it means for how thoughtful people actually consume.
The number on the label kept climbing
Start with the scale of the change. Under the University of Mississippi Potency Monitoring Program, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the average THC content of cannabis seized by the DEA rose from 3.96 percent in 1995 to 16.14 percent in 2022, a 308 percent increase. Retail dispensary flower routinely tests higher than that seizure average, and concentrates now reach 90 to 95 percent THC. Over the same window, average CBD, the calming counterweight to THC, fell, pushing the THC-to-CBD ratio in the opposite direction.
None of that happened by accident. Legal markets were built to reward the single most legible metric on the shelf, the THC percentage, and cultivators, extractors, and marketers all optimized for it. "What is the strongest thing you have" became the default question, and the industry answered it enthusiastically.
Strength stopped being the same thing as quality
Here is the problem with a potency arms race: past a certain point, more THC does not buy a better experience. It buys a more intense one, which is not the same thing, and for a lot of people it is actively worse.
The health literature has grown pointed. A 2026 systematic review of high-potency cannabis use links it to elevated risks of cannabis use disorder, psychotic disorders, and impaired cognition, alongside more acute problems like adverse psychological reactions and accidental poisonings. The concern is not that cannabis is dangerous in some blanket sense. It is that very high concentrations, consumed casually and without any sense of dose, move more people into the range where things go wrong.
A potency number tells you how strong a product is. It tells you nothing about how much of it you should actually take.
That gap, between how strong something is and how much you take, is the entire point. And it is the part the label was never designed to help with.
Regulators are drawing a line
In 2026 the pushback stopped being theoretical. Connecticut reinstated a 35 percent THC cap on flower just weeks after voting to scrap it. The Canadian province of Québec holds a 30 percent cap on most non-edible products. Lawmakers in California, Georgia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Oregon, and South Dakota all introduced potency-related measures, and while many stalled under industry resistance, the direction of travel is clear. Policymakers are increasingly treating raw potency as a public-health variable, not just a marketing one.
You can argue about whether hard caps are the right tool. Reasonable people do, and the industry has legitimate concerns about regulating a legal product by a single blunt number. But the underlying instinct, that unbounded potency with no framework for dose is a bad combination, is sound.
The connoisseurs already moved on
The most interesting signal is not coming from regulators at all. It is coming from experienced consumers. Budtenders now report that customers increasingly ask about terpene profiles, cultivation methods, and cannabinoid ratios rather than simply demanding the highest THC number on the wall. Craft flower, careful curing, and balanced ratios are becoming the markers of a discerning buyer.
That is what maturity looks like in any category. Nobody judges a wine by its alcohol percentage, or coffee by pure caffeine content. They judge it by the quality of the experience and their control over it. Cannabis is finally growing into the same sensibility.
Control is the metric that actually matters
This is the premise The DART was built on, well before it became a headline. If the strength of the flower is largely out of your hands, potency is decided by the grower, then the one variable you can actually own is how much you consume. And that comes down to hardware, not willpower.
Our pipes are machined to hold a specific, repeatable amount of ground flower. The DART MD chamber holds 0.15 grams, a deliberately small, measured load. The DART Pro holds 0.25 grams and adds a filter and mesh screen for a cooler draw. The DART Plus holds 0.30 grams for a slightly larger session. In every case the amount is fixed by the tool, so a session becomes something you can repeat instead of something you improvise.
In a 4 percent-THC world, packing by feel was forgiving. In a world of 20 percent flower and 90 percent concentrates, the same careless pinch delivers several times the dose it used to, and the margin for error has collapsed. A measured chamber is how you put that margin back. It lets you take a small amount of even very strong flower, wait, and decide, rather than committing to whatever a loose pinch happens to contain.
Where this goes next
The potency arms race is not over, but its logic is cracking. Health research, state policy, and the taste of experienced consumers are all converging on the same conclusion: the strongest option is rarely the best one, and a number on a label was never a substitute for knowing your dose.
We are glad to see it. A category that competes on control, quality, and experience instead of raw intensity is a healthier category, and frankly a more interesting one. Strength was easy to sell. Precision is harder, and it is the thing that actually respects the person using the product.
Take less of something strong, on purpose, and you are already ahead of the arms race.
